SELANGAU: A Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) here has taken a proactive step by organising a Burie cloth handicraft workshop in its effort to preserve their cultural heritage and enhance the local economy.

JKKK Kepayang Jaya held the workshop at Rumah Kechendai Kepayang Jaya, Jalan SK Iban Union, Sungai Arip today (March 24).

The programme not only exposes women to the skills of making Burie cloth, a traditional attire of the Iban community but also creates opportunities for generating household income.

According to the committee’s chairman, TR Kechendai Kalob, the workshop is part of an ongoing effort to ensure that traditional arts do not fade with time.

“Handicrafts are not only cultural symbols but also have the potential to be a source of income.

“We want housewives and the local community to see their craftsmanship as an economic asset,” he said.

He also encouraged women to continue exploring their creativity with Burie cloth and other traditional crafts such as Tangu, Sugu Tinggi, and modern variations that are gaining attention.

The workshop was organised under the JKKK Governance Incentive Scheme, monitored by the Selangau District Office, demonstrating JKKK Kepayang Jaya’s commitment to elevating traditional arts while strengthening family economies.

“Burie cloth is becoming increasingly popular within the community.

“If these efforts continue, we will not only preserve tradition but also ensure that it becomes a sustainable source of income,” Kechendai added.

With a positive response from participants, JKKK Kepayang Jaya plans to continue similar programmes, ensuring that Iban handicraft heritage remains alive and appreciated.
