KUCHING: A resolution for the gas distribution issues between Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) will be announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

According to news report by TVS, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg expressed his confidence that the matter can now be considered resolved, while awaiting the actual announcement.

“So, this matter is not really a problem, it is just from a legal perspective where Petronas relies on the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA), while we (Sarawak) rely on the Oil Mining Ordinance (OMO) 1958, and it has been decided that both PDA and OMO can coexist.

“However, many have made this into a big issue, with some claiming that Petronas will lose RM100 billion.

“Yes, maybe there will be a slight reduction due to the gas distribution. I believe this matter can be resolved. In fact, now it seems there is a resolution, but I cannot reveal it yet. Let Anwar announce the solution to us. It is done,” he said during a recording session of a ‘Temu Bual Khas Pasca-Belanjawan Sarawak 2025’ on TVS, yesterday (Dec 10).

Meanwhile, Abang Johari said the state-owned oil and gas company will continue its cooperation with Petronas in the gas industry in the region.

He clarified that Petros and Petronas control a large portion of the gas reserves in Sarawak, adding that this also means that the exploration of these natural resources in Sarawak will be shared, and the previous issues mainly involved legal aspects.

The interview, moderated by Dr Muhammad Asri Mohd Ali, a renowned economist from Universiti Malaya and a member of the National Council of Professors is set to premier tonight at 8.15 pm on TVS.

Viewers will get to hear a detailed explanation on Sarawak’s historic RM15.8 billion budget — the largest in its history.

The discussion explores how the transformative budget will shape the state’s infrastructure, economy, and overall prosperity.
