KUALA LUMPUR: PETRONAS has launched the PETRONAS Energy Transition Academy (P-ETA) to equip energy workers with the skills necessary for the shift to cleaner energy.
Established through the company’s training arm INSTEP, the academy is open to global participants and aims to provide training aligned with evolving industry demands.
Launched during the Energy Asia conference, the academy was officially opened by PETRONAS President and Group CEO Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik.
He highlighted that P-ETA will help shape a more equitable energy future by providing opportunities for professionals to develop the skills needed to meet global energy demands.
The academy will offer programmes in areas such as carbon management, hydrogen, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and circular economy practices.
These will be aligned with international standards and emphasise experiential learning.
Located at INSTEP’s campus in Terengganu, the academy aims to support Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap, which predicts that a successful transition could create up to 310,000 jobs by 2050.
In addition, INSTEP signed memoranda of understanding with P-ETA training partners: SEDA Malaysia, the Energy Institute (UK), and OPITO. The launch also featured a High-Level Session on Decarbonisation, focusing on reducing methane emissions, with speakers from PETRONAS, the International Society for Energy Transition Studies, and JOGMEC.
The Southeast Asia Methane Emissions Technology Evaluation Centre (METEC), also discussed at the session, will support monitoring, verification, and R&D related to methane emissions. An engineering study is underway to establish METEC at INSTEP and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS in Perak, under a collaboration with JOGMEC.
Also present at the launch were PETRONAS Group Chief Human Resources Officer Ruslan Halim Islahudin, Chief Sustainability Officer Charlotte Wolff-Bye, SEDA Malaysia Chief Operating Officer Koh Keng Seng, Energy Institute Chief Executive Dr Nick Wayth, OPITO Chief Operating Officer Alex Spencer, and INSTEP Chief Executive Officer Azhar Ahmad.
