MIRI: Sarawak’s energy transition and industrial growth will require a safe, resilient and highly reliable pipeline infrastructure, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said a robust pipeline infrastructure was increasingly important as the state entered a new phase of energy- and industry-driven development.
“A safe and resilient pipeline infrastructure that meets high standards and reliability is important in supporting Sarawak’s energy transition and economic transformation,” he said in his text speech read out by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at the opening ceremony of the Borneo Pipeline Conference 2026 here on Wednesday (Aug 26).
He said developments in Sarawak’s energy sector, including the establishment of Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS), the development of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), as well as the liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydroelectricity and green hydrogen sectors, required a strong and reliable pipeline network.
“Besides meeting the latest standards, such infrastructure must also meet high safety and reliability standards, in line with the State’s new phase of energy- and industry-based development,” he said.
Abang Johari said Sarawak must continue strengthening its expertise in pipeline design and integrity, subsea engineering, infrastructure decommissioning and technologies supporting the energy transition.
He also stressed the importance of developing human capital, particularly among young engineers and professionals, to ensure the local workforce is equipped with the skills required to navigate changes brought about by the energy transition.
