SEMATAN: The coastal town of Sematan came alive today as the highly anticipated speedboat races kicked off, drawing thrill-seekers and spectators from across Sarawak for one of the biggest highlights of the Sematan Festival.

With the roar of engines echoing across Kuala Sematan, speedboat enthusiasts wasted no time testing the limits of their finely tuned machines.

The event — a perennial crowd-puller — saw enthusiastic participation across multiple racing categories, fuelling excitement throughout the seaside community.

This year’s festival offers more than just high-octane action. A host of family-friendly activities and cultural showcases are scheduled over the weekend, making Sematan a magnet for visitors looking to soak in both adrenaline and atmosphere.

Yet, concerns lingered amid the festivities. A spell of hot, dry weather combined with worsening haze has cast a slight shadow over the festivities. According to the Department of Environment, Lundu district — where Sematan is located — recorded the highest Air Pollution Index (API) in Sarawak as of midday yesterday.

Festivalgoers have been urged to stay hydrated and take health precautions while enjoying the outdoor events.

Still, spirits remain high. With boats skimming the water at breakneck speeds and crowds lining the riverbanks, Sematan continues to revel in the pulse of one of its most beloved traditions.
