KUCHING: Proposals to reinstate the Pontianak–Kuching flight and explore a new route to Balikpapan in East Kalimantan were discussed between outgoing Indonesian Consul General, Raden Sigit Witjaksono, and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
During the farewell courtesy call to Abang Johari at his office, Wisma Bapa Malaysia today, Raden said there is potential in opening the new route in line with the development of Indonesia’s new capital city, Nusantara, in Kalimantan.
“The Premier welcomes the proposal to enhance connectivity between Kalimantan and Sarawak, and we hope this can be realised in the near future,” he said.
Raden, who will be concluding his term of office on April 30, also expressed his appreciation for the close cooperation that has been established between Indonesia and Sarawak throughout his three-year tenure.
“The cooperation between Indonesia and Sarawak has been excellent, especially over the past two years, during which many joint initiatives and activities have been carried out, particularly in the economic and socio-cultural sectors,” he said.
Raden also conveyed his hope that the bilateral ties would continue to be strengthened by his successor.
“I will encourage my successor to continue efforts to enhance this collaboration, including exploring further potential in the border regions,” he added.
He emphasised the importance of cooperation in the energy sector, including the supply of hydroelectric power from Sarawak to West Kalimantan, and Sarawak’s contribution to the energy needs of North Kalimantan.
“The strengthening of cooperation in the energy sector, including the supply of hydroelectric power from Sarawak to West Kalimantan, is a strategic aspect that brings significant benefits to both parties,” he said.
On another note, he thanked the Sarawak government for its support during the Indonesian general election last year, which was conducted smoothly and peacefully.
“With 52 polling stations set up across Sarawak, the smoothness of the process would not have been possible without the close cooperation of the local authorities,” he said.
Meanwhile, Raden will return to Jakarta to continue his service at the Foreign Affairs Ministry of the Republic of Indonesia.
