KUCHING: Eogene Ewe needed just 35 minutes to sweep aside fellow Malaysian Cheam June Wei 21–15, 21–15 and book his place in the quarter-finals of the Macau Open Super 300 at Macau East Asian Games Dome today (June 18).

Facing the vastly experienced former Youth Olympic Games gold medallist for the first time, Eogene produced a commanding display from start to finish.

The youngster capitalised on his height, reach and youthful energy to stretch June Wei around the court, repeatedly forcing the veteran onto the defensive and denying him any chance to settle into a rhythm.

The result was a stunning 21–1 opening-game scoreline that left the seasoned campaigner with a mountain to climb.

June Wei responded with greater resistance in the second game, drawing on his experience to extend rallies and test Eogene’s composure.

But the youngster continued to dictate play and carried an 11–5 advantage into the interval before maintaining control to complete the straight-games victory.

Mixed doubles

Hoo Pang Ron and Lai Pei Jing progressed to the quarter-finals after defeating Chinese Taipei’s Cheng Kai Wen and Liu Chiao Yun 21–13, 21–12.

However, Low Han Chen and Chan Wen Tse bowed out following a 20–22, 16–21 defeat to China’s Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin.

Liew Xun and Ho Lo Ee also exited after going down 21–16, 12–21, 19–21 to China’s Zhu Yi Jun and Li Qian.

Women’s singles

Malaysia’s campaign suffered a setback when Goh Jin Wei was forced to retire from her Round of 16 encounter against India’s Anmol Kharb.

Men’s singles

Huan Kai Hern’s run came to an end after a 10–21, 9–21 loss to Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen.

Women’s doubles

Ong Xin Yee and Carmen Ting advanced to the last eight with a straight-games victory over Chinese Taipei’s Chou Ya Ching and Sung Yu Hsuan.

Men’s doubles

Malaysia enjoyed a productive outing in the men’s doubles as Chia Wei Jie and Teo Ee Yi battled past China’s Hu Kai and Lin Xiang Yi 23–25, 21–16, 21–13.

Low Hang Yee and Ng Eng Cheong also progressed after defeating Singapore’s Edmund Koh and Jovan Kubo 21–18, 21–14.

Nur Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong completed the quarter-final lineup after edging compatriots Boon Xin Yuan and Lwi Sheng Hao 21–17, 22–20.

The tournament is currently underway and is set to conclude on June 21 this Sunday.
