SIBU: A foreign detainee who escaped from lawful custody last Saturday, has been recaptured earlier today.

The 25-year-old Indonesian, who was under remand for a rape case, was tracked down and arrested along Jalan Terap around midnight following a two-day manhunt.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili confirmed the arrest when contacted recently.

The man had earlier sparked a major police operation after fleeing the central police station while still in handcuffs and clad in a purple lock-up uniform.

He was being investigated under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code for rape, which involves victims under the age of 16.

Zulkipli said the foreigner’s arrest is being investigated under Sections 223 and 224 of the Penal Code for escape from lawful custody and negligence.

If convicted, the offence provides for imprisonment for a term of up to two years, a fine, or both.
