SRI AMAN: A 39-year-old inmate who escaped from Sri Aman Central Prison on the early morning of November 20 was recaptured by police in under 12 hours.
Sri Aman Police Chief, Supt Dennis Bunyam, said John Sambang Sangau fled from the prison’s residential block at 7:15 am on Thursday.
A manhunt was immediately launched involving police, prison officers, and tips from the public.
Acting on information about a suspicious man in Jalan Brayun, police tracked the suspect to an unfinished house, where he was arrested at 6:20 pm.
Dennis credited the quick recapture to the strong cooperation between PDRM, the Sarawak Prison Department, and the local community.
The case is being investigated under Sections 223/224 of the Penal Code, and police will seek a remand order to probe how he escaped and whether others were involved.
Earlier, an extensive search operation codenamed ‘Ops Kesan’ were launched after a male inmate escaped from the Sri Aman Central Prison.
Sambang, 38, escaped the prison by climbing over a temporary gate behind Blok Rahmat 3.
Prison personnel conducted an immediate sweep of the area but failed to locate him.
