TANJUNG MANIS: The Sarawak Government is looking at the possibility of carrying out sustainable development here, in line with the global shifts towards environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Tanjung Manis was originally envisioned by the late former Chief Minister, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who developed the area as a timber industry hub.
“So, we want to continue the efforts of Tun Taib. The current generation must carry on his efforts.
“However, the (development) approach will be different because the global economy has changed,” he said at the launch of the Tanjung Manis Airport Upgrading Project here today.
Abang Johari said future development in Tanjung Manis must be balanced and aligned with current global standards.
“Right now, the main focus is ESG. Therefore, the government together with Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) is discussing how to develop Tanjung Manis in line with this,” he added.
Regarding the proposed airport expansion, he said the project is estimated to cost over RM320 million, and will primarily focus on extending the runway.
He added that other development plans may include the establishment of a golf course and hotel to be managed by the private sector.
“These developments will bring direct benefits to the people of Belawai. The villagers and visitors will be able to enjoy better amenities along the Belawai beachfront,” he said.
Abang Johari however expressed concern over coastal erosion and requested the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) to carefully look into how to minimise the impact with a proper barrier that not only protects the coastline but also helps keep the beach clean.
“In some foreign countries, their beaches are polluted and lack oxygen. Here, we have plenty of oxygen; that could be a unique attraction for us,” he said.
To support tourism, he said state-owned airline, AirBorneo, might help with marketing and branding, possibly offering travel packages to promote the area.
“Therefore, the people here must be ready to welcome visitors. Hopefully, this brings economic benefits to our people,” he said.
He added that Belawai will be further upgraded to attract more visitors to the area in an effort to stimulate the local economy.
“This means, firstly, we can attract visitors from outside. Secondly, it will have a positive impact on the local economy. When more people come, restaurants too will thrive,” he said.
