KUCHING: Representing Malaysia on the world stage is a dream come true for Sarawakian Ethan Damien Goh Chen Ming as he makes his debut at the 2026 IBF World Youth Championships on home soil.

The 16-year-old is the only Sarawakian selected to represent the national team at the prestigious tournament, which is being held at Megalanes Sarawak from June 27 to July 7.

Speaking to Sarawak Tribune, Ethan described his maiden appearance at the World Youth Championships as a proud milestone in his bowling journey.

“I’m feeling really great. This is my first World Championships, and it’s my first time,” he said.

While honoured to wear the national colours, he admitted feeling some pre-competition nerves.

“It’s really, really great for me, but I might feel a little nervous. It will be all right,” he said.

Competition began today (June 28) with the singles event before continuing until July 7, with bowlers aged under 21 from around the world competing for honours.

Despite facing some of the world’s best young bowlers, Ethan said he was keeping his expectations realistic.

“I’m trying not to set my expectations too high. Hopefully, we can win as many medals as we can and fight for our country,” he said.

Ethan revealed that his bowling idol is Australian star Jason Belmonte, whose revolutionary two-handed technique has inspired bowlers around the world.

The teenager, whose father is from Kuching, began bowling at the age of seven and has steadily risen through the junior ranks through his talent and dedication.

Competing on home soil for the first time at a world championship, Ethan hopes to make the most of the opportunity while proudly representing Malaysia on the international stage.
