SARATOK: Sarawak’s rich ethnic diversity is a key strength in fostering harmony and stability in the state.

Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri said that Sarawak is home to 27 ethnic groups, making it a region renowned for its cultural, racial and religious diversity, a prime example of multiracial unity in Malaysia.

“The beauty of Sarawak’s unity is evident when celebrations such as Christmas, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Gawai Dayak and Chinese New Year are celebrated together in an atmosphere of mutual respect, goodwill and community spirit,” he said at the Christmas celebration at Rumah Panjang Anau in Entebu on Saturday.

He noted that festive celebrations like Christmas serve as a unifying medium for the community.

“Celebrations in Sarawak are not just annual events; they are important platforms to encourage visiting one another, foster friendliness and strengthen ties among families, neighbours and communities regardless of race or religion,” he said.

He stressed that this practice has long contributed to Sarawak’s harmony and stability.

“We in Saratok are particularly fortunate to live in peace and harmony despite being a multicultural, multireligious and multiethnic society,” he added.

Mohamad urged that the spirit of unity and consensus already established must continue to be preserved and strengthened for the wellbeing of all.

“Even though we come from different ethnic backgrounds, we remain united under one flag – the Ibu Pertiwi.

“Strong unity is the cornerstone of Sarawak’s strength in ensuring that the state remains peaceful, prosperous, respected and progressive,” he said.

He hoped this year’s Christmas celebration would bring greater peace, joy and prosperity to all.

“Do not allow anyone to divide our unity. The spirit of ‘Segulai Sejalai’ embraced by the people of Sarawak must continue to be strengthened,” he added.
