KUCHING: Residents living near flood-prone areas are urged to evacuate immediately if necessary.

Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki also advised residents not to take risks by refusing to evacuate as instructed by the village head or community leader.

“Listen to the advice of your village head and penghulu in your respective areas.

“Never take unnecessary risks. Yes, we understand that some may be reluctant to leave their homes, but remember that personal safety is more important,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after visiting the temporary relief centre (PPS) Haji Kamaruddin Hall at Kpg Segedup here today (Jan 30).

He said relevant authorities are constantly monitoring the water levels, adding that if the water rises rapidly, personal safety should be prioritised.

“When the rescue boat arrives, make sure to bring important documents such as your identification card and passport.

“At the same time, do not take too long, as it could put lives at risk.

“There have been cases where residents refused to evacuate because they wanted to protect their belongings, which ultimately made the situation more difficult. That is why all residents must cooperate and evacuate to a safe place as instructed,” he added.

Ibrahim also noted that all areas under the state government have established special teams to handle disasters such as floods.

“These teams function as a center to address any issues that may arise in our area.

“For example, this year we are facing floods, so all necessary facilities such as shelters, food and drink supplies, as well as financial assistance, are already prepared if needed.

“We have experience dealing with situations like this, so there is no need to worry. As long as everyone cooperates, the situation will be well under control,” he added.

For the record, there are 61 flood victims, which involve 26 families who were placed in the PPS Haji Kamaruddin Hall, Kpg Segedup here. At the moment, two villages were affected by the flood, namely Kpg Segedup and Kpg Surih.
