KUCHING: The Sessions Court here has sentenced a former nurse aide to two years in prison for committing criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving RM5,790 in ambulance service payments belonging to the Kuching Life Care Society.
Bonia Matthew, 32, pleaded guilty before Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman to two charges under Section 408 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to 14 years in prison, caning, and a fine upon conviction.
The first charge accused her of misappropriating RM1,530 received from a 67-year-old client at the organisation’s office in Jalan Foochow 1, between March 12, 2024, and March 5, 2025.
The second charge involved RM4,260, which she allegedly misappropriated from a 57-year-old client at the same location between February 9, 2024, and March 19, 2025.
Afidah sentenced Bonia to one year in prison for each charge, with both sentences to run concurrently beginning April 21.
According to the case facts, a representative of the organisation lodged a police report after Bonia failed to hand over the collected payments.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Fadzri Azham Zainudin, while Bonia was represented by counsel Athur Liang Dawat. The investigation was led by Insp Lai Hwa Yen and Sgt Steven Kamarau.
