KUCHING: Former Serian Member of Parliament, Datuk Amar Dominic Dago Randan’s passing has left a void in the hearts of the Bidayuh community and the wider Sarawakian society.
A respected elder, statesman, and a quiet yet unwavering pillar of strength, Dago is credited with being a steadfast advocate for his people throughout his political journey.
In a heartfelt tribute, former State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker, Datuk Seri Robert Jacob Ridu, recalled his personal encounter with the late leader, describing him as a man of steady conviction who embodied humility, grace and uncommon wisdom.
“I had the privilege of being introduced to him at a dinner hosted by the then-Sarawak State Financial Secretary, John Hepburn, in Kuala Lumpur in early 1963, just as they finalised the Federation agreement.
“I was on my way to the United Kingdom (UK) to pursue my studies, and though the setting was informal, it was immediately clear that he carried the weight of history with humility and grace,” Ridu said.
At the time, Dago was not yet thirty but already served as an Independent Member of the Council Negri representing Serian, and his calm presence and thoughtful insights, shared without fanfare, left a lasting impression.
“As a 19-year-old then, I felt a tremendous sense of pride that in Dominic Dago Randan, we had a Bidayuh flag bearer at such a critical moment in our nation’s history.
“When I returned from the UK, inspired by his example, I immediately joined the flag bearer in Parti Bumiputera,” Ridu added.
Throughout his life, Dago remained a beacon for the Bidayuh community, quietly but firmly contributing to shaping a brighter future for his people.
His legacy is a testament to the belief that true strength does not need to raise its voice, and that leadership can be carried forward with gentleness and unwavering resolve.
“My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, relatives, kampong community, and all who knew and admired him,” said Ridu.
“May he rest in peace, and may his remarkable contributions continue to inspire future generations.”
Dago leaves behind a legacy of leadership and a timeless example of dignity, humility and service to the nation.
