Excitement builds as pickleball super series unveiled

KUCHING: Following the overwhelming response to the recent pickleball competition, the Tupong SABERKAS and Tupong PBB branches are already planning a larger, more prestigious tournament in the form of a super series.

The series will feature multiple competitions throughout the year, culminating in a grand finale by the end of 2025.

Chief political secretary to the Premier, Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, in his address, shared his excitement for the sport’s future.

“The response has been overwhelming, and when we open this pickleball competition for registration, many were interested.

“In the future, we will have a few series of pickleball competition and possibly by the end of the year, we will have a grand finale of the tournament,” he said.

A vibrant crowd of 190 participants gathered for the exciting competition in the Tupong constituency, all vying for the coveted YB Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman’s Cup.

The opening ceremony for the competition was jointly officiated by Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS) Datuk Abdullah Saidol and Fazzrudin who is also the Tupong assemblyman.

Abdullah congratulated the Tupong SABERKAS branch and the Kuching Pickleball Association (KPA) for organising the programme.

“I think the pickleball sport was first introduced to Sarawak in Miri but now in Kuching, the sport has gained traction to the extent that everyone in Sarawak knows about it.

“I hope with Datuk Fazzrudin being a sportsman, and overseeing sporting associations, he will be able to assist the pickleball sport and elevate it to a higher level.

“Hopefully in the future, pickleball could be a sport competed in tournaments such as the Malaysian Games,” Abdullah said in his speech at the Matang Baru 10 Multipurpose Hall here today.

During the event, Abdullah and Fazzrudin participated in an exhibition pickleball doubles match against Kuching Pickleball Association vice president Alex Teow and executive committee member Sapri Rambli.

The competition featured six exciting categories – Men’s Open Doubles, Men’s Veteran Doubles, Women’s Open Doubles, Men’s Open Singles, Mixed Open Doubles, and Novice Doubles.
