SARAWAK’s intention to increase the number of elected representatives in its State Legislative Assembly (DUN) is a strategic and vital move to ensure fair representation and balanced development across the state.

Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon thus said the tabling of Dewan Undang Negeri (Composition of Membership) Bill, 2025 to increase the number of elected members in DUN from 82 to 99, is more than a mere numerical adjustment but a significant enhancement of the state’s democratic process.

“By expanding the assembly, we are providing more voices, perspectives and diverse opinions — ultimately fostering more inclusive decision-making that benefits our entire community,” he said when debating on the Bill during the special DUN sitting today.

Chukpai further said the increase reflects not only the constitutional mandate but also the growing needs of Sarawak’s diverse and geographically vast population.

“Our state encompasses sprawling rural areas that remain sparsely populated yet rich in cultural heritage and natural resources.

“Historically, these rural communities have faced challenges in voicing their needs within the legislative process, often overshadowed by densely populated urban centres.

“The increase from 82 to 99 members aims to address this disparity,” he said,

Such move, he added, would support more equitable infrastructure development and sustainable growth that aligns with Sarawak’s vision of inclusive progress.

“We must also acknowledge the demographic shifts brought about by recent policy reforms – most notably, the lowering of the voting age to 18 and the implementation of automatic voter registration.

“Thus, with more voters, particularly among youth and in urban areas, our legislative body must expands to ensure fair and effective representation,” he said, while adding that this guarantees that every voice — regardless of age or location is heard and contributes to shaping the state’s future.

He also said the increase in elected representatives would prevent over-concentration of political influence in a few urban constituencies while promoting equitable distribution of legislative resources and attention.

“In addition, a more representative legislative body enables us to address local needs more effectively.

“Greater diversity in our assembly leads to more comprehensive policies that reflect the varied interests of Sarawak’s diverse communities — urban, rural, young and old,” he said.
