KUALA LUMPUR: The government has been urged to fast-track the construction of SMK Puncak Borneo, stressing the need to meet the growing educational demands of rural communities in the area.
Puncak Borneo Member of Parliament, Datuk Willie Mongin, said the project would ensure better and more accessible secondary education for students in the constituency, without them having to travel far.
“The construction of SMK Puncak Borneo is essential to provide quality education closer to home for the youth in the area.
“With this school, students will no longer need to commute long distances to attend secondary school,” he said during the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) debate in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday.
Willie also appealed for several other key projects in the constituency to be included under 13MP, including the establishment of a vocational school, upgrading of the Kampung Annah Rais-Simuti road, the proposed Puncak Borneo Hospital, flood mitigation works, drainage improvements, and increased allocations for Native Customary Rights (NCR) land surveying in Sarawak.
He added that developing rural education infrastructure should be made a government priority to ensure every student, regardless of background, has equal opportunities to succeed.
“SMK Puncak Borneo will not only improve access to education but also serve as a catalyst for community development. It will provide students with the platform to realise their full potential across various fields,” he said.
