KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has directed a developer to submit a written explanation within seven days following a crane incident at a construction site in Lorong Stutong Baru 4 on Thursday (Feb 12).

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the crane had toppled and fallen onto two neighbouring residential houses, causing damage to their roof structures.

Although no injuries were reported, he said the council viewed the matter seriously as it involved public safety and private property.

“The safety of the public is our highest priority. We will not compromise when it comes to safety compliance at construction sites within our jurisdiction,” he said in a statement today (Feb 13).

Wee said the developer has begun repair works on the affected houses.

He added that MBKS has instructed the developer to provide details on the cause of the incident, safety supervision measures in place, immediate actions taken, as well as the proposed rectification and compensation plan for the homeowners.

The council’s directive letter has also been copied to the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Sarawak and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Sarawak for further action.

“We expect full cooperation from the developer and all relevant parties to facilitate a thorough investigation. The affected residents must be given a fair and timely resolution,” he said.

Wee stressed that MBKS would not hesitate to take further action should there be any breach of safety requirements.

On Thursday, a crane was reported to have toppled onto two houses in Taman Seah Meng, Stutong at about 8.30 am, causing severe damage to their roof structures.
