KUCHING: Some 48 passengers went through an anxiety-filled experience after the express boat they were travelling in hit a wharf of a logging camp in Batang Rajang in Kapit last Tuesday around 5.00pm.

It was said that the express boat had departed from Sibu earlier in the afternoon and was supposed to have arrived at the terminal in Kapit town before 5.00pm. However, the high water level coupled with debris in the river hampered the navigation.

A team of five firefighters from Kapit fire station, led by Senior Fire Officer II Perita Jepai, rushed to the scene after being alerted on the incident at 5.45pm.

Upon arrival at the scene, located two kilometres from the fire station around 5.49pm, they were told that none of the passengers onboard were injured and the skipper had ordered everyone to disembark shortly after navigating the boat to the river bank.

The firefighters then carried out an investigation and returned to the fire station at 6.20pm.
