KUCHING: Sarawak’s position as a rising sports tourism destination continues to strengthen, with the DBKU International Extreme Games and CANROLL Pro Urban Festival 2026 drawing strong international participation and driving visitor spending.

Visitor arrivals reached 437,677 in January 2026, a 9.27 per cent increase from the same period last year. Of that total, 247,063 were international visitors, while domestic tourism grew by 14.05 per cent to 190,614. Tourism receipts also climbed to RM1.115 billion, up by nearly RM100 million.

Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said events of this scale play a crucial role in sustaining the state’s tourism growth while enhancing its global profile.

“These figures reflect growing confidence in Sarawak as a destination of choice, and events like this help sustain that momentum,” he said during the official launch on Saturday.

He added that sports tourism is gaining traction globally, with visitors increasingly travelling not only to watch competitions but also to experience local culture and attractions.

The five-day festival, which brings together international athletes, supporters and spectators, is expected to generate spillover benefits for sectors such as hospitality, transport, food and beverage, as well as small and medium enterprises.

“Events like the Extreme Games help position Sarawak as a competitive destination for international sporting events,” he said.
