PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has assured Malaysians that ongoing energy subsidy reforms are focused on easing the cost of living, not increasing financial strain.
The Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation said the government is restructuring subsidies to ensure they reach the right people, especially lower- and middle-income groups.
“Starting this July, 85 per cent of the people will enjoy lower electricity bills, with savings of up to 14 per cent,” he said this in a statement today.
He added that RON95 fuel will be reduced to RM1.99 per litre under a new targeted subsidy scheme, ensuring that only Malaysian citizens benefit, while foreigners will pay market prices.
“This proves that reforms do not have to be burdensome. Instead, they can bring justice and relief to the majority,” he said.
The initiatives were part of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent “Penghargaan Untuk Rakyat Malaysia” message.
He highlighted how inclusive policies under the MADANI government are yielding tangible results—from strong GDP growth to improved competitiveness.
“Economic indicators are moving in the right direction. Our Q1 GDP grew by 4.4 per cent, and projections for the second quarter are even higher at 4.5 per cent,” he noted.
Apart from that, Fadillah, who is also Minister in charge of Sabah and Sarawak affairs, welcomed the prime minister’s announcement of Sept 15 as an additional public holiday in conjunction with Malaysia Day celebrations.
On rural development, he cited the expansion of Kampung Angkat MADANI to 200 villages and the goal of establishing 1,000 Sekolah Angkat MADANI nationwide by the end of the year. Jualan Rahmah MADANI will also be extended to all 600 state constituencies.
He said such reforms reflect the government’s determination to ensure that no one is left behind.
“Let us continue supporting the MADANI agenda that gives meaning to the people’s lives, from villages to cities, from Semenanjung to Borneo,” he said.
