KUCHING: Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, has voiced his support for the proposal to increase the number of Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) members from 82 to 99, highlighting the need for improved representation in the state’s vast and diverse regions.

Speaking to reporters after attending the ‘Microsoft AI for My Future’ course at CENTEXS Kuching today, Fadillah said the proposal had undergone thorough review at the state level and was justified during debates in the DUN.

“Personally, I support it. Sarawak is a huge state, almost the size of the entire Peninsular.

“In considering new seats, we must not only look at population size but also land area and ethnic representation,” he said.

He explained that many remote areas require stronger administrative attention and representation to ensure local voices are heard and development is better coordinated.

Fadillah believes the move will contribute to more effective governance and support Sarawak’s ambition to become a developed and prosperous state by 2030.

When asked if the move brings Sarawak closer to realising its Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) demands, Fadillah responded that the focus should be on efficient administration.

“With more representatives, we can improve delivery, especially in rural areas. That’s what matters to the people,” he said.

Responding to questions about a meeting between the Prime Minister and leaders from Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN), Fadillah said Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) was not involved as the discussion focused on pressing issues in Peninsular Malaysia.

“For GPS, we don’t see any issue. I personally engage with our representatives and am aware of what needs to be clarified.

“These matters have already been discussed at the Cabinet level,” he said.

He also mentioned that a retreat involving all Members of Parliament, ministers, and deputy ministers under the Unity Government is scheduled for next weekend, during which further briefings will be held.

Fadillah also confirmed that he would be heading to Sabah, but clarified that the visit is related to technical discussions on MA63 specifically involving Sabah and not linked to recent federal political meetings.
