Malaysian singer Faizal Tahir has won widespread admiration for his humility and sincerity after quietly taking part in a humanitarian mission in Aceh.
According to fellow volunteer Dr Ghafur Rahim Mustakim, the singer — best known for his hit ‘Selamat Malam’ — never once complained despite the challenging conditions throughout the four-day mission from February 18 to 21.
As accommodation was unavailable near the remote flood-hit areas, the team had no choice but to stay in the homes of affected villagers. Ghafur admitted he repeatedly checked whether Faizal was comfortable with the arrangement.
“I kept asking him, ‘Are you sure you’re alright staying in the villagers’ homes?’ He simply replied, ‘No problem,’” he shared on Instagram, alongside a photograph of the singer fast asleep on the floor of a modest village house, resting on a thin mattress.
The conditions were far from easy. The group slept without fans, proper mattresses or blankets. Basic toilet facilities were lacking, and mosquitoes proved a nightly nuisance. Food was simple and workdays were long.
Yet Faizal, Ghafur said, never voiced a single complaint nor made any special requests.
“We would head out early in the morning to distribute aid and continue until breaking fast. He never once asked for a break,” he recalled.
Perhaps most striking was the singer’s decision to keep a low profile. Instead of revealing his celebrity status, Faizal introduced himself simply as “Ahmad” to the local community.
When asked why he preferred not to disclose that he was a well-known artiste, his response was deeply moving. He did not want to receive special treatment.
“It’s a reflection for all of us. May we have more people like this,” Ghafur said.
In a separate video shared online, Faizal was also seen leading congregational prayers during the mission — a quiet testament to the grounded character that has earned him respect both on and off the stage.
