BINTULU: The issue of identity impersonation on social media continues to raise concern after a fake Facebook account was detected using the name and photos of Tanjong Batu assemblyman, Johnny Pang Leong Ming, posing risks of fraud and public confusion.

Pang said that the unauthorised account was identified by his service centre team and described the act as irresponsible.

He also warned that it could damage his reputation and open the door to misuse of information.

“My team has detected yet another fake account using my photo without permission. This is deeply regrettable and should not happen,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

According to him, such impersonation not only tarnishes an individual’s image but also has the potential to be exploited for scams and the spread of false information that could mislead the public.

He urged the public to remain vigilant, not to easily trust suspicious accounts, and to verify the authenticity of any information before taking action.

“I would like to remind everyone to be more cautious and not fall victim easily,” he stressed.

He also informed that a police report has been lodged regarding the case, and the matter has been handed over to the authorities for further action.

The issue of identity impersonation involving public figures is seen as increasingly serious, highlighting the need for cooperation from all parties to curb digital crimes and protect the public from becoming victims of online scams.
