CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has opened 36 investigation papers (IPs) over the spread of fake news related to a purported global energy crisis on social media and digital platforms.

In a statement, the MCMC said 22 individuals from various parts of the country have been called in to have their statements recorded to assist investigations.
It added that six of the investigation papers have been referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further review and subsequent action.
The cases are being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.
MCMC stressed that it takes seriously any misuse of social media and digital platforms that may mislead the public through the dissemination of false information.
It warned that firm action will be taken against individuals found to have breached existing laws.
Members of the public were also reminded to act responsibly when using social media and digital platforms, and to avoid sharing content that could disrupt public harmony and order.
