BINTULU:  Illegal loggers have made an unwelcomed return to Sebauh area with ‘fake tags’ to avoid detection, but thanks to the efforts of Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), their activities have been curtailed in an enforcement operation last Thursday.

According to a statement by SFC yesterday, an enforcement team from its One-Stop Compliance Centre (OSCC) in Sg Mas was the first to detect the suspicious activity within a buffer zone between two timber license areas in Ulu Sg Sera, Sebauh, Jalan Bintulu-Samarakan.

“The subsequent raid of the said location was carried out by a joint team comprising officers from the Bintulu Regional Office and OSCC Sg Mas.

“So far, 303 logs and an excavator have been detained, not including 9 additional piles of logs either buried or camouflaged with tree branches. A closer examination of the logs revealed that many of the logs have been tagged with fake LPI (Log Production Identity) tags,” said the statement.

The corporation said a report on the incident was lodged at the Bintulu Police Station and the case was handed over to the Forest Department for further investigation and disposal.
