KUCHING: The Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak has called for better maintenance of old trees in the city.

Its chairman, Michael Kong, made the call after a tree along Jalan Pending, near Chung Hua Middle School No 1, fell and landed on a passing vehicle during strong winds and heavy rain yesterday (Jul 15) afternoon.

“Many old trees in Kuching have not been well taken care of, and we have seen some instances of fallen trees at places such as the amphitheatre.

“More must be done to maintain and preserve these huge trees,” he said in a statement after visiting the site of the incident.

He also commended the State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and contractors from the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) for their swift response in clearing the fallen tree and ensuring the road was safe again.

“While the clearing works were ongoing, we assisted the police in diverting traffic using alternative routes to ease congestion in the area.

“We also noticed a nearby tree with a snapped branch at risk of falling, and immediate steps were taken to trim and secure it to avoid any further danger,” he said.

In a separate statement, Kong said another tree had fallen along Jalan Ban Hock, causing a Telekom Malaysia pole to collapse and block an entire lane of the road.

“We immediately contacted the police, and they responded swiftly by dispatching personnel to direct traffic and ensure the safety of road users.

“We have also reached out to Telekom and requested that they send their contractors to remove the fallen pole as soon as possible,” he said.

He further urged all road users to drive carefully, especially in light of the current weather conditions, which may contribute to such incidents.
