KUCHING: Panic briefly erupted inside Plaza Merdeka on Wednesday night (Dec. 31) after ceiling debris fell inside the mall, injuring three local women.

It was understood that the incident happened at around 8:00 pm, leaving an employee and two customers with light injuries.

All three were attended to by the mall’s management before being taken to the hospital for medical check-ups.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said they were alerted of the incident and dispatched firefighters from Padungan station to assess the situation.

However, no operational action was required, as the incident was already under control and did not pose further immediate danger.

Meanwhile, Plaza Merdeka has since assured that the situation is under control with its management and maintenance teams responding promptly to secure the affected area and implement necessary safety measures.

“We would like to assure the public that the safety of our shoppers, tenants, and staff remains our top priority.

“Plaza Merdeka continues to operate in a safe environment, and we will keep everyone informed on further updates and progress. We appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation,” the mall said.
