SIBU: The International Day of Families 2025 celebration served as a vital platform to strengthen family institutions and promote unity among Sarawak’s diverse communities.

According to Bawang Assan State Assemblyman, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, the programme organised by National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) went beyond commemorating the annual date on May 15.

“It is also an effort to raise awareness on the challenges faced by families – socially, economically and demographically,” he said.

He said this when officiating the programme with the theme ‘Family-Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development: Towards the Second World Summit for Social Development’_ at the Sibu Indoor Stadium here today.

He emphasised that family-focused policies should be central to national development strategies.

“Families form the foundation of a harmonious and sustainable society,” he stressed.

Wong also pointed out that each family has its own formula for happiness.

“What matters most is love, care, and quality time.

“These values not only strengthen family ties but also positively impact individuals’ emotional and psychological well-being,” he added.

He called on all members of society to prioritise family welfare, regardless of background or ability.

“Strengthening family institutions is a long-term investment by the government, which requires collaboration from parents, communities and related agencies,” he added.

He said strategic partnerships through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives should be expanded to ensure more families benefit directly.

In conjunction with the upcoming Gawai celebration, Wong also presented food baskets to eligible recipients to help ease their festive preparations.
