MIRI: Sarawak Oil Palms Berhad (SOP) offered an overview of its sustainable palm oil operations when it hosted an industrial visit for members of Persatuan Informasi Ibu Bapa Miri (PIIBM).
The visit gave parents and children a comprehensive, ground-level understanding of the industry, from training academy to mill to estate.
The programme was designed to break misconceptions and allow families to witness first-hand the processes, technology and sustainability standards that underpin SOP’s operations.
It is among the company’s more hands-on public engagement efforts, aimed at strengthening community understanding of responsible palm oil production.
The visit began at SOP Academy, where participants were introduced to milling fundamentals and observed practical product demonstrations. The session helped parents and children appreciate the technical discipline involved and how quality assurance is built into every stage of the production chain.
The group later proceeded to the Lambir Palm Oil Mill for a guided walk-through of the facility where fresh fruit bunches are processed into crude palm oil and palm kernel.
Observing the mill in real-time gave visitors rare insight into automated systems, production controls and the sustainability measures embedded into daily operations.
The final stop was Lambir 1 Estate, where families explored the nursery and observed estate activities, including sustainable harvesting practices and routine field management.
For many of the participants, the visit gave a clearer picture of how plantations are managed, how seedlings are cultivated and how sustainability begins from the very first stages of planting.
Lambir 1 estate manager Shridharan said the event reflects SOP’s ongoing commitment to community awareness.
“We are pleased to welcome PIIBM members and their children to see our operations up close. Introducing families to the work that takes place across the estate and mill helps build clearer understanding of the industry and the important role each stage plays,” he said.
