MIRI: The Family and Women Safety (FAWS) and Anti-Scam Literacy (ASL) Course Series 2/2025, organised by the Sarawak Women and Family Department (JWKS), concluded on a high note at the Sarawak Islamic Complex’s Multipurpose Hall here on Thursday.

The closing ceremony was officiated by Deputy Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister I, Datuk Rosey Yunus, who is also the state assemblywoman for Bekenu.

In her remarks, Rosey commended JWKS, particularly its Social Support and Advocacy Section, for spearheading an impactful programme that addresses critical issues affecting local communities.

She emphasised the importance of continuing such initiatives to empower society with knowledge on safety, health, legal rights, and cybercrime prevention.

“A total of 100 participants, comprising community members, government agencies and NGOs, took part in the two-day course. It provided in-depth exposure to family safety, mental health, and the modus operandi of scam syndicates,” she said.

She also highlighted alarming crime statistics, noting that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) recorded 788 sexual harassment cases last year, up from 522 in 2023.

Meanwhile, cybercrime saw 35,368 reported cases of scams and commercial crimes, with nearly RM1.6 billion in losses by the end of 2024.

“Given this worrying trend, the Anti-Scam Literacy course is crucial in raising public awareness and equipping communities to combat the growing threat of cybercrime,” she added.

The course was conducted with the strategic involvement of agencies such as the PDRM, the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MoH), the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM).

Topics covered included drug abuse, child safety, infectious diseases, mental health, online transactions, cyberbullying, and internet fraud.
