KUCHING: The Sirih Pulang ke Gagang Family Day was successfully held at the Kampung Telaga Air Community Hall, drawing 250 family members and special guests for a day dedicated to celebrating heritage and strengthening family ties.
The event, organised by the extended family of Nuruddin Sibo and Suyah Muhamad, was chaired by village head, Harry Nuruddin and officiated by community chief Hussaini Nuruddin, who also served as the programme advisor.

The family of Nuruddin, the original residents of Kampung Trombol, traces its lineage through nine children: Yusuf, Hussaini, Othman, Masbah, Mohd Pauzan, Harry, Joni, Sharkawi, and their adopted son, Wan Hossen, along with 42 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, reflecting a rich generational legacy.
The main objective of the Family Day was to reunite relatives near and far, strengthening familial bonds and fostering a sense of belonging among members of the sprawling family tree.
Among the notable guests were Penghulu Murshidi Johari, Zaini Tanggek (the community leader of Kampung Telaga Air), and Osman Kolol (the community leader of Kampung Trombol), who joined family members in the festivities.
The event, which took six months of meticulous preparation inspired by Harry, was a collaborative effort managed by family members themselves, showcasing the spirit of teamwork and unity.
A variety of games and competitions added excitement to the celebration, including the Sabok Tying competition, Nopeng (a type of Sarawakian Malay dance), Ketupat weaving, a cooking competition, a ping pong ball-in-spoon game, and a coin-rolling game.
A total of 27 hampers were prepared for the lucky draw, adding cheer and prizes to the day’s activities.
In his speech, Hussaini reminded everyone of the importance of maintaining harmonious, peaceful family relationships built on mutual respect.
He emphasised that family days should not only be for enjoyment but also for reconnecting and getting to know extended relatives.
He expressed hope that such gatherings could be organised annually or at least every two years.
