KANOWIT: A married couple and their four-month-old baby were rescued after being stranded on the roof of their van along Jalan Lukut Penyulau here due to rising floodwaters.

The family was en route to open their shop when their journey was halted by severe flooding, leaving them trapped and unable to proceed.

Zone 4 Fire and Rescue Department chief Andy Alie said an emergency call was received at 6.15am.

“Upon arrival, we found the victims on the roof of their van,” he said in a statement today (Jan 13).

Rescuers, equipped with life jackets, waded through the floodwaters to reach the family.

“The water was about four feet high, and the stranded vehicle was about 120m from dry ground,” Andy added.

After the rescue, the family was taken to a nearby coffee shop, where they waited for relatives from Sibu to pick them up.

The operation was successfully completed at 7.33am.
