KUCHING: As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, local football fans are eagerly awaiting the tournament, with many hoping to see Cristiano Ronaldo finally lift the one trophy missing from his glittering career.
At 41, the Portugal captain is expected to feature in what could be his final World Cup, prompting many supporters to dream of a fairytale ending for one of football’s greatest players.
Michael Leo Mungin
For event and sales marketing executive Michael Leo Mungin, the dream is simple – to see Ronaldo lead Portugal to World Cup glory before bringing the curtain down on his illustrious career.
“I have been a big fan of Cristiano Ronaldo since I was young. It was heartbreaking to see Portugal fall short in the last World Cup, especially with him nearing retirement.
“Now at 41 years old, I hope he can finally win the World Cup and complete his career with that achievement,” he said.
Despite backing Portugal, Michael believes France could emerge as the team to beat.
“Portugal, France and Spain all have a chance. Portugal probably have one of the best midfields, while France still have one of the strongest attacking squads. Spain have Lamine Yamal, who can make the difference.
“But if I have to pick one team, I would go with France,” he added.
Sharene Ong
While many fans are rooting for Portugal, student Sharene Ong will be keeping a close eye on four-time champions Germany.
“I’ll be watching the World Cup because it’s exciting to see the best teams compete against each other.
“As a Gooner, Kai Havertz is one of my favourite players, so I’ll definitely be keeping a close eye on Germany during the World Cup,” she said.
Sharene believes Germany have the potential to challenge for the title if their younger generation continues to develop and perform on football’s biggest stage.
“Germany have a strong football tradition and a lot of talented young players coming through. I think they have a good chance of going far in the tournament,” she added.
Biolyni Bujeng
Like many football supporters, Biolyni Bujeng is already counting down to the tournament, which she regards as the sport’s ultimate spectacle.
“I will definitely be watching it. It’s the biggest sporting event in the world.
“I am a big Ronaldo fan, so hopefully Portugal can bring it home. I would also love to see Brazil go far, but I think Spain might dominate this year,” she said.
According to Biolyni, Spain’s fluid style of play, attacking quality and recent momentum make them one of the strongest contenders for the title.
Alvi Si Kai Chiek
Manchester United supporter Alvi Si Kai Chiek shares the hopes of many Ronaldo fans who want to see the Portuguese icon complete his collection of honours with a World Cup triumph.
“This could be Cristiano Ronaldo’s last FIFA World Cup with Portugal. I hope he finally wins the World Cup this time.
“As a Manchester United fan, I wish him all the best in fulfilling that dream,” he said.
Now playing for Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, Ronaldo remains one of football’s most recognisable figures more than two decades after making his professional debut.
The Portugal legend has scored more than 900 career goals and won numerous major honours, including five UEFA Champions League titles and the UEFA European Championship with Portugal in 2016.
Yet despite his remarkable achievements, the World Cup remains the one prize missing from an already glittering collection.
