KUCHING: The ‘Semai Inklusif’ (Inclusive Seeding) programme empowers persons with disabilities (OKU) community in Sarawak to acquire resilient urban farming skills through hands-on training and a structured, supportive learning environment.
The initiative, carried out under the APPGM-SDG in collaboration with the Sarawak CSO-SDG Alliance and the Sarawak Disabled Skills Development Association (SOSDA), focuses on building both agricultural knowledge and personal development among participants.
SOSDA programme lead, Dunstan, who oversees the training, said the project aims to equip participants with practical farming skills ranging from seed sowing to harvesting, while fostering confidence and independence.
“When we give people the right tools and the right support, they grow in every way — not just as farmers, but as individuals. That is what ‘Semai Inklusif’ is all about,” he said.
Participants, including those with no prior farming experience, learn to cultivate microgreens, and practise urban farming techniques using grow lights and indoor tools.

Some have shared how the programme had encouraged personal growth.
“I feel proud because I can grow something on my own. It makes me happy to see the microgreens ready for harvest. I never thought I could do this before,” one participant said.
The initiative supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including No Poverty (SDG 1), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12) and Life on Land (SDG 15).
Beyond technical skills, the programme promotes teamwork and community support while offering opportunities for supplementary income.
‘Semai Inklusif’ is open to OKU individuals, caretakers, youth, retirees and community members interested in learning to grow vegetables for food.
No prior farming background is required.
With continued collaboration between the project partners and guidance from SOSDA, ‘Semai Inklusif’ aims to expand its reach and strengthen its role in building a resilient and inclusive farming community in Sarawak.
