KUCHING: A fashion exhibition was held here Sunday (Feb 9), blending traditional Indian elements with modern Western aesthetics.

The event, held at Wonderboom, Green Heights Mall, was organised by Datin Karishma Shankar Asnani, a textile technologist residing here for many years, who brought Indo-Western fashion to the local audience for the first time.

“Indian ethnic wear is deeply ingrained in our culture, and we take great pride in it. However, as the world evolves, fashion must adapt to global markets while staying true to its roots,” Karishma explained.

“India has made significant strides in the fashion world. What I’m wearing today is an Indo-Western design by an Indian designer. It carries an Indian touch but follows Western styles, making it both modern and versatile,” she said, expressing her passion for reviving Indian fashion in Sarawak.

The exhibition featured designers from India and those of Indian origin, including a designer based in Jakarta.
Karishma hinted at even bigger projects ahead, including a potential fashion catwalk.

“This is just the beginning. We hope to collaborate with more designers and expand this initiative,” she said.
One of the key highlights of the exhibition was the introduction of the textile giant, the Binwani group, represented by director Vijay Binwani.

Established in 1940 in George Town, Penang, Binwani’s has since expanded to Kuala Lumpur and made its mark on the international stage.

“Our main responsibility is to innovate while maintaining our legacy,” said Vijay.

“This year marks our 100th anniversary, and we are celebrating it by unveiling unique collections that pay homage to our history.”

The company is also committed to cultural preservation.

As part of its centennial celebration, Binwani’s launched ‘Hari Baju Melayu’ on Aug 8 last year to promote Malaysia’s national attire, and plans to hold the event annually on the same date.
