MARUDI: A father and his nine-year-old daughter have been reported missing after being swept away by strong currents in the Sengayan River, Long Jekitan, Baram, today (Apr 14).

The victims have been identified as 46-year-old Dawellies Luing, who serves as a Student Management Assistant (PPM) at SK Long Jekitan, and his daughter, Vallerie Mentie Dawellies.

According to preliminary reports from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, the incident occurred when the pair attempted to cross the river in a single cab four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Emergency services received an alert just after midday following communication from the Marudi Police Headquarters regarding the incident. It is believed the incident took place around 8 am.

In response to the situation, the Marudi Fire Station has planned to mobilise a team to the site of the incident early tomorrow morning at 6 am.

Given the challenging terrain, which can only be accessed by four-wheel-drive vehicles, the journey is expected to take approximately 10 to 12 hours.
