SIBU: A 32-year-old man was today sentenced by the Sessions Court here to 12 years in prison and six strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to two charges of physically sexually assaulting his teenage daughter.
When the nature of the charges was read and explained to Taufik from Daro through an interpreter, he confirmed that he understood them as well as the consequences of maintaining his guilty plea.
Both incidents took place at a house in Kampung Bahagia Jaya, Teku, between 1 pm and 2 pm on Mar 15.
Judge Musyiri Peet sentenced Taufik to 12 years’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane for each charge, with the jail terms to run concurrently.
The court also ordered him to undergo counselling during his imprisonment and to be placed under two years of police supervision upon release.
According to the facts of the case, on Mar 20 at 12.36 pm, while the complainant (the victim’s mother) was at work at Jalan Deshon, she received a phone call from her daughter’s teacher requesting her to come to the school at 2.30 pm.
The teacher informed the complainant that her daughter had disclosed being molested by her father.
Acting on this information, about 10.30 pm the same day, a police team led by Insp Hakimi proceeded to Kampung Bahagia Jaya, Teku, where they arrested the accused.
He was subsequently brought to Sibu Central Police Station for further action.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Cynthia Emmelda Jerry prosecuted the case, while the accused, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency in sentencing.
