KUCHING: Datuk Lau Cheng Kiong, a prominent businessman and the father of Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker and Lanang MP Alice Lau, has passed away at the age of 75.
The Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI), where Lau served as president, confirmed his passing in an internal notice, describing the sudden loss as a “tremendous blow” to the association.
Lau reportedly fell ill on Sunday night while traveling on a flight from Taiwan to Kuala Lumpur.
Born on Jan 28, 1951, in Nanga Tada, Lau spent his early years in a riverine environment where he developed an expertise in shipbuilding and navigation.
He eventually rose to become a highly respected community leader and a central figure in Sibu’s business sector.
The SCCCI noted that Lau was loved by his colleagues and that details regarding his funeral arrangements would be shared in due course.
