KUCHING: Thirteen-year-old swimmer Sheamus Chew Heng Yi is making waves for Malaysia, and behind every stroke is the unwavering support of his father, Dick Chew.

Representing the country at the 47th SEA Age Group Championships 2025, Sheamus brought home an impressive five medals: gold in the 100 metres (m) freestyle, silver in the 50 m butterfly and 200 m individual medley, and bronze in the 100 m backstroke and 4×200 m freestyle relay.
It may be too soon to say, but Sheamus, who hails from Kuching, is already laying the groundwork for a potential shot at the 2027 SEA Games.
Behind the podium finishes lies a simple, consistent routine.
“I just do my part by sending him to training every day,” said Dick when contacted by Sarawak Tribune on Saturday.
The young swimmer remains grounded and focused on his journey.
“I’ll try my best to make it happen. After I return, I must train even harder to improve,” Sheamus said.
Power Aquatics Swimming Club (PASC), where Sheamus trains, celebrated his stellar performance, calling him a “superstar” for his determination, speed and fighting spirit in every race.
At 172 cm tall, Sheamus is keeping his head down and his eyes on the next turn.
With the continued support of his family and coaches, the dream of donning national colours at the SEA Games 2027 may be just a few laps away.
For the record, three other swimmers from PASC also represented Malaysia at the championship – Chereen Ngo Yirui, Elisha Lee Ern and Ethan Tan Kheng Hong.
