KUCHING: Every day, Dick Chew drives his son, Sheamus Chew Heng Yi, to swimming practice, unwavering in his commitment to ensuring his son’s success.
“I take him to swimming every day, come rain or shine — never miss a session.
If I can’t, his grandfather will step in. Dedication is key,” he explained, having been Sheamus Chew’s steadfast supporter throughout his swimming journey.
This tireless support, coupled with a focus on both training and education, has been instrumental in the young swimmer’s remarkable achievements in the pool.
Taking place from Feb 7 to 9, the 51st Sarawak Age Group Swimming Championship (SAGSC) , Sheamus’s dedication bore fruit as he clinched an impressive 15 gold medals — a testament to his hard work.
He attributed his success to his mentality and consistent effort.
“It was all about mentality and continual hard work,” he told Sarawak Tribune at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre post-meet, emphasising the mental strength and focus required to excel.
His discipline and determination have set him apart as one of the standout athletes at the meet.
Training nine times a week, both morning and evening, Sheamus Chew’s commitment to his craft is evident.
“I am always pushing myself to go further,” he remarked.
He also set a new record in the 1,500 metres freestyle with a time of 18:40.37, surpassing the previous record of 18:42.96 set by Bong Yi Xiang in 2024 and also won the Best Boy Award for Group 3.
Sheamus Chew is not only making his family proud but is also setting his sights on the international stage. Last year, he represented Malaysia in Bangkok, Thailand, and this year, he is preparing for a competition in Singapore.
His swimming journey has only begun, and with his father’s unwavering support and his own relentless drive, the future looks exceptionally bright for this rising star.
