KUCHING: The construction of the Federal Integrated Government Complex (BGP) here is currently 132 days ahead of schedule, with overall physical progress reaching 17 per cent to date.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan expressed hope that the project would continue to remain ahead of schedule to ensure its early completion.

He said he had been briefed that 25 federal government agencies are currently operating from rented premises, particularly shophouses, across Kuching.

“These 25 agencies need a centralised location so they can operate under one roof.

“That is why this BGP is being developed so they are no longer scattered, and the public can easily access services from all 25 departments in one place,” he told a press conference after attending a project briefing at the site here today.

He added that the target is to complete the project earlier than its scheduled completion date of Nov 28, 2028.

The project, which began on Nov 29, 2024, carries a cost of RM140.8 million and is being implemented via a design-and-build approach by contractor Eastbourne Corporation Berhad.

Ahmad Maslan noted that although the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) was not a requirement, the contractor had taken the initiative to adopt it.

“BIM is beneficial as it helps reduce costs, minimise design errors and prevent clashes in construction planning. It is used alongside the Industrialised Building System (IBS) and components such as Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC),” he said.

He also expressed confidence that the project would be successfully delivered under the supervision of the special project team from the Public Works Department (JKR) Malaysia.

On education infrastructure, Ahmad said there are currently 1,492 projects nationwide under the Works Ministry, with a total value of RM37.98 billion.

Of these, 764 are in the pre-construction stage while 721 are in post-construction.

“For Sarawak, there are currently 77 education projects worth RM4.13 billion,” he said.

He explained that out of the 77 projects, 25 are in the pre-construction stage, 23 are under construction, and 28 have been completed but are still within the Defect Liability Period (DLP).

“As examples, pre-construction projects include SMK Demak Baru, while SMK Tabuan Jaya is a post-construction project that has reached 100 per cent completion,” he added.
