KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called for stronger federal-state collaboration to drive the growth of Sarawak’s semiconductor sector.
He urged Putrajaya to back the state’s efforts under the national semiconductor strategy at the launch of X-FAB Sarawak’s 40K Fab expansion at Sama Jaya High Tech Park yesterday.
“I would like to seek the support of the Federal Government to work together with us in developing Sarawak’s semiconductor ecosystem. This partnership will help speed up our efforts in building local talent and developing intellectual property in chip design and production in Sarawak,” he said.
He noted that Sarawak’s renewable energy, particularly hydropower, offers a competitive advantage in attracting and sustaining high-tech investments.
“Our power comes from renewable energy sources, which is hydropower. It is reliable, cost-competitive and aligns with the global push for sustainable and green manufacturing. Companies such as X-FAB, who value environmental stewardship, will find in Sarawak a natural partner for green growth,” he said.
The Premier said the state government has invested in infrastructure and provided competitive electricity and water rates to support Sama Jaya industries, which have already drawn RM15.4 billion in investments.
Beyond technology and infrastructure, Abang Johari stressed that the semiconductor journey is also about people.
“Technology is ultimately about people. The story of X-FAB Sarawak is not just one of silicon wafers and cleanrooms. It is the story of a local workforce rising to meet world-class standards, and a government that continues to believe in the power of long-term vision,” he said.
