MUKAH: Healthcare development should go beyond the construction of hospitals and clinics and must be supported by comprehensive basic infrastructure to ensure effective service delivery.

Deputy Health Minister and Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib said strong strategic collaboration between the federal government, the Sarawak government and the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MoH) is crucial, particularly in addressing healthcare delivery challenges in the state.

“Essential infrastructure such as road connectivity, treated water supply, electricity and reliable communication systems play a vital role, especially in rural and remote areas.

“Without solid infrastructure support, the healthcare service delivery system cannot be implemented optimally or sustainably,” she told reporters after an official visit to Mukah Hospital here on Monday (Feb 2).

Hanifah Mukah MP also highlighted that technological advancements have made it possible for specialist consultations to be conducted remotely, helping to improve access to treatment and potentially saving lives in areas facing a shortage of medical specialists.

She added that the sharing of experience and expertise among healthcare management and personnel is important in strengthening Sarawak’s healthcare system over the long term.

Touching on recent engagements, Hanifah said a meeting involving health directors throughout Sarawak had provided a platform to discuss the current status of hospitals, clinics and district health offices throughout the state.

During the visit, she also spent time with patients at Mukah Hospital and presented 30 recipients with food baskets worth RM100 and cash assistance of RM200 as part of efforts to support patient welfare.

The visit was also attended by Mukah Hospital director Dr Ardif Damiri and Kapitan Kang Boon Eong.
