MUKAH: A 21-year-old woman was killed in a three-vehicle collision at Kilometer 16, Jalan Mukah-Balingian, late this morning (March 27).
Mukah Police Chief, DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias, said the accident occurred at about 11.45 am and involved a four-wheel drive (4WD), a motorcycle and a lorry.
He said initial investigations found that the 4WD, driven by a 60-year-old man, was travelling from Balingian towards Mukah town when it suffered engine trouble and stopped suddenly on the road.
A motorcycle ridden by the victim, who was travelling in the same direction, failed to avoid the vehicle and crashed into its rear.
“The impact caused the motorcycle to lose control and veer into the opposite lane, where it was hit by an oncoming lorry driven by a 31-year-old man.
“The victim, from Kampung Penipah, sustained severe injuries to her head, limbs and body, and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel,” he said in a statement.
The drivers of the 4WD and the lorry were not injured.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
