KUCHING: Unity remains the cornerstone of Sarawak’s social fabric, and festive celebrations play a vital role in strengthening harmony among its diverse communities, said Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai.

He said MPP consistently celebrates all major festivals, including Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Gawai and Christmas, as part of its efforts to promote unity in the state.

“This is an MPP function, and normally we celebrate all festive occasions, be it Hari Raya, Gawai or Christmas. This is to promote unity in Sarawak,” he said during the lighting up of the Christmas Tree ceremony at Batu Kawah Riverbank Park here last night (Dec 21), officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The programme is jointly organised by the Batu Kawah Old Town Association and MPP, with the lights set to remain illuminated until the first week of January.

He noted that most of the festive decorations and installations were prepared by MPP staff and councillors, reflecting the council’s collective commitment to fostering togetherness.

“In Sarawak, the most important element is unity. Without unity, we cannot do anything at all,” he stressed.

He added that festive decorations at the Batu Kawah Riverbank Park would continue throughout the year in line with the various celebrations, starting with Christmas, followed by Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Gawai.

He said such initiatives are aligned with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which places strong emphasis on social inclusivity.

“One of the pillars of PCDS 2030 is social inclusivity. That is why everybody is encouraged to come here and celebrate together,” he said, reiterating that unity remains paramount in Sarawak.
