KUCHING: The celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri is not only a religious observance but also a powerful reminder for Sarawakians to reaffirm their standing and steadfastly defend the state’s rights as an equal founding partner in the Federation of Malaysia.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said Aidilfitri, which marks the beginning of Syawal, also carries a message of unity, forgiveness and togetherness among the multiracial and multi-religious communities in the state.

He added that the unity and diversity in Sarawak form a strong foundation for harmony, in line with the spirit of ‘segulai sejalai’, which emphasises togetherness in building the future.

“In Sarawak, this spirit of togetherness reflects the unique strength of our society, where people of various races and religions visit one another, share festive dishes and celebrate the occasion as one large family.

“This celebration is not only a time for joy and forgiveness, but also a moment for reflection on who we are, where we come from, and what we must defend,” he said in a special address in conjunction with the 2026 Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

Uggah further stressed that Sarawak is among the founding partners of Malaysia, and that its autonomy and dignity are clearly enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

In this regard, he called on all Sarawakians to remain united in supporting these efforts, noting that the strength of the state depends on the unity of its people.

“This is not a right granted by anyone, but rather part of the very foundation of the formation of Malaysia itself.

“The steps taken are not merely administrative matters, but are for the sake of justice and to ensure that what rightfully belongs to Sarawak is returned, while safeguarding the future of coming generations,” he reiterated.

“When we stand united, our voice becomes stronger and clearer. Therefore, during this blessed festive season, let us strengthen our unity and stand firmly with the state leadership.”
