LONDON, England: English clubs led global spending on international transfers during the 2026 winter window, PA Media/dpa reported, citing a new FIFA report.

Clubs in England spent USD363 million (RM1.430 billion) on signing talent from overseas, out of a global men’s football total of USD1.95 billion (RM7.683 billion), according to FIFA’s January Transfer Snapshot.

That was the second-highest winter window total ever recorded, behind January 2025 (USD2.37 billion or RM9.34 billion).

Conor Gallagher’s move to Tottenham from Atlético Madrid for £34.7 million (USD47.1 million or RM185.57 million) was the biggest January spend on a player based outside England, with West Ham’s signing of Taty Castellanos from Lazio and Bournemouth’s move for Rayan from Vasco da Gama also among the biggest deals.

Clubs in Italy, Brazil, Germany and France were the next biggest spenders behind England, according to the report.

January 2026 proved to be a record winter window in women’s football, with over USD10.8 million (RM42.66 million) spent by clubs around the world, smashing the 2025 record by more than 85 per cent.

English clubs again led the way, spending USD5.03 million (RM19.82 million). That included Manchester City’s signing of United States international Sam Coffey from Portland Thorns. – BERNAMA-PA MEDIA/DPA
