KUCHING: Hundreds here have lost millions of ringgit to financial scams sweeping through the city “like a silent storm”.
Kuching Buddhist Society (KBS) President, Andy Kho, stressed that this issue is not just about statistics.
“They are our neighbours, friends, and families who have fallen victim to these scams.
“Officers from the Central Bank of Malaysia (BNM) face pleas for help every day as the scale of deception grows,” he said in his speech during the Financial Scam Awareness Programme held at today.
Kho further noted that, as a society, it is crucial to prevent harm before it happens.
“This programme is an effort to replace the fear of being scammed with knowledge and resilience.
“Therefore, I encourage everyone here to listen closely, ask questions, and bring these lessons home as tools of empowerment, compassion, and protection against financial fraud,” he added.
The programme welcomed officers from BNM and the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK), who shared insights on how scammers operate and practical steps people can take to protect themselves.
